Position Summary
Bring our games to life by leading the creation of the math models that drive slot game play. Guide the math team through the development process—set priorities, solve problems, remove obstacles, and facilitate communication—all with the goal of providing the best gaming experience for the slot player. The ability to work quickly and efficiently as part of a team, take direction, and maintain a positive attitude under pressure is crucial.
Responsibilities:
Lead a growing math department consisting of 10+ managers and individual contributors, keeping them motivated, informed, and engaged, including:
Supporting junior math managers by providing guidance on their teams’ game projects and mentorship for personal, professional, and team development
Managing senior-level individual contributors by providing project direction, support, and technical and design feedback on the math of their assigned games
Managing a small team of software engineers focused on math tool development, simulation and prototype development, and other projects as needed
Act as the primary liaison between the math team and game design team, including:
Understanding and setting math team priorities based on studio and company roadmap commitments
Collaborating with the game designer in an iterative development process, to help vet game mechanic and math design feasibility, and make recommendations for balance and player experience
Owning the quality and timely delivery of math for the entire math department
Work closely with other departments as the primary contact for the math department, including:
Working with the product team to vet game requirements and define game specific attributes (in conjunction with the game designers) as they relate to a game’s math
Collaborating closely with senior math leaders in other development centers to define and update math standards across the global R&D organization
Supporting the analytic teams to help answer questions, collect and interpret math model data, and make recommendations for priorities for future investigation
Acting as the primary point of contact to answer questions and provide support related to game math as needed by the commercial and field teams
Mentor junior mathematicians on all aspects of the mathematician role
Collaborate with other mathematicians and game designers to brainstorm new game mechanics and to determine mathematical feasibility of concept math models
Develop an understanding of competitive products and technologies
Contribute to overall Game Development department culture
Qualifications
Experience
15+ years of professional experience in applied mathematics, probability, and/or combinatorics
5+ years of professional experience leading teams, managing mathematicians, and/or providing project math or design direction
Experience designing or supporting the design of slot games is required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Enjoy working in a creative environment
Have strong multi-tasking skills
Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work will with others in a team environment
Ability to bring projects to completion with minimal supervision
Ability to adapt to a customer-oriented, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Proficient in Microsoft Excel
Proficient in C++, C#, or a similar object oriented programming language
Familiarity with working in a Windows programming environment, including Visual Studio
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field or equivalent work experience required
